How do you support someone when he or she feel depressed?

Before supporting someone, asking about what occurred is important. I cannot give him/her any suggestions or support if I don’t know the occurrences. My strategies depend on how the situations are. Sometimes I give him/her some inspirational ideas. Anyway, if the situation is terrible, to give a hug is powerful; a hug means millions words. And I think I don’t need to speak anything. Just stay by side and be a good listener.

Stay by side, do not let them feel they are alone and encourage them to feel better.
I am not sure when someone feel depressed, what they really want. But if it was me, I just need someone who can make me laugh stand by my side.

I will listen to them and cheer them up.
I think sometimes people don't want suggestion, they just want someone to listen to them.
And after they tell what they are feeling, they may go over it.
